Lucky 15 Thursday

6pm Thursday

Ludlow for Fridays Lucky 15. Yesterday no losers with Lingfield frozen off!

Been here before! I’m more optimistic this time.” Inspection @LudlowRaceClub tomorrow at 8am ahead of racing. Temperatures down to -5C last night and -3C forecast tonight.”

Ludlow 12.50          BLUE COMET                     6/1 general

Ludlow 1.20             BABY KING                         10/3 general

Ludlow 1.50             WILL O’THE WEST          6/1 general

Ludlow 2.20            MIDNIGHT FOLIE           7/2 general

and here is why

Ludlow 12.50          BLUE COMET                     6/1 general Plenty of nice sorts in this C5 2m 5f maiden hurdle many of them making their hurdling debuts. Blue Comet is one on debut but he has bumper experience and the yard are bullish about him over this longer trip and his ability to hurdle. Encouraged by Paddy Brennan taking the ride. Same family as Gas Line Boy and Hold on Julio both rated OR150+.

Ludlow 1.20             BABY KING                         10/3 general Just love these C3 Limited novices handicap chases where a horse can go chasing off his hurdle handicap mark. The time to catch these nascent chasers is in their first three runs and trainers such as Tom George, Fergal O’Brien and Venetia Williams farm these events. Messrs George and, stable jockey, AP Heskin have an ideal candidate here in Baby King. Rated as high as 129 over hurdles where he was thought good enough to run in the Betfair hurdle he gets in here off 125. Neither trip nor ground should be an issue, just those pesky first time fences.

Ludlow 1.50             WILL O’THE WEST          6/1 general I’m quite keen on this one, have done him singly. Many of his opponents are stepping up in trip whereas the selection comes back to the bare 3m over which he has the best form on show when a close third to the Philip Hobbs pair, Golden Doyen and For Good Measure, at Cheltenham in a C2 handicap off just three pounds less. He drops in grade and no problems with trip, ground and Tom O’Brien in the saddle plus in-form trainer Henry Daly has had four winners in the last fourteen days.

Ludlow 2.20            MIDNIGHT FOLIE           7/2 general Not sure this mare will be the safest conveyance or if she will stay the trip but I have even more issues with the rest of the field! There are plusses. She could have won last time over a shorter trip but for falling at the second last and previously was second at Huntingdon when she made too many jumping mistakes. I like Ben Pauling as a trainer, I think he places his horses well. This season he trains a few for Godolphin supremo and ex-trainer John Ferguson and his son, Mr Alex Ferguson, has been taken on by the yard as Amateur jockey. The yard’s blog says “He has had plenty of experience for his age having had three rides at the Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals this year and rode round the national fences as well.” He has PtP experience as well and hopefully he can get the selection a) round b) in front of everything else!

Meanwhile some horses to note at Wetherby.

“Wetherby Racecourse @WetherbyRaces  Please note that we are holding a Pre-cautionary Inspection at 8am in the morning. Revised forecast now indicating cold and clear night. Forecast now suggests that it could drop as low as -2C again, with cloud & rain not arriving until late morning.”

Richard Johnson shuns his local track Ludlow to head north, supposedly to ride the highly promising Westend Story in the 2.10. He could be a handicap plot (Martin Pipe, Cheltenham Friday?) if they could get him anywhere near high 130’s. Think he could be a 150 performer.

Then there is an expensive purchase running in each division of the bumper. In the 3.10 Neil Mulholland saddles Espoir de Teillee for Roger Brookhouse, who paid £220K for this 5yo gelded son of Martaline, who fell on his only run in an Irish PtP!! Espoir de Teillee has been the subject of strong home reports and Noel Fehily takes the ride.

In the 3.40 the horse who has the antennae twitching is Hear No Evil. Firstly he is trained by Dan Skelton and will be ridden by his brother Harry. Secondly he will wear the dark Blue silks of Mrs John Magnier, wife of leader of the Coolmore “lads”. Thirdly this unraced 5yo gelded son of latest “hip” sire Getaway cost 150K euros. Here’s a shocker, Getaway is one of the band of Coolmore’s NH stallions!
